Question: How can I keep track of questions about entries in QB that I need to ask my accountant? I usually end up with notes scattered across my desk.

Answer: QuickBooks has a very useful feature for this called Ask My Accountant, found in your Chart of Accounts (COA).

It is an “Other Expense” account and is usually at the end of the COA. When you are entering transactions in QB and you don’t know how to handle it, put it into the Ask My Accountant account and alert your accountant or bookkeeper to it.

And, conversely, your bookkeeper or accountant may have a question for you to answer.

I do month-end work for some of my clients, and when I encounter a transaction that I’m unsure of, I put it into Ask My Accountant. My clients know to look there and let me know the details so the correct entry can be made.

Putting something in Ask My Accountant does not mean you can just leave it there. It is going in as an expense in this account when it might be something totally different. These entries need to be identified and cleared up so that the balance in Ask My Accountant returns to zero.

Especially in today’s world of remote workers, this is a useful tool for bookkeeping and accounting.
